Moss roses are usually portulaca, but these don't look like any portulaca I have ever seen. Not that I'm an expert by any stretch. The leaves look like a sedum, but I have never seen blooms like this on a sedum. I hope someone can ID them! How lovely!

I love them! They open in the morning and close at night. I remember when I was a little girl, first thing in the morning mom and I would go outside to see what colors were open. I have some sunset mix out there too, but they are just starting to bloom. My fiance tried to kill them..lol.. he dropped the container I had them in, broke it and then planted them in a peanut canister one night while I wasn't home. As if I wouldn't notice.. :) He meant well, lol.

Sorry the picture is so big. I forgot to resize it. I also have pictures of the seed pod. I probably got close to 100 seeds off of that one plant over the weekend, provided that I'm picking the right thing off. :)

They look like portulaca to me. The little spiky leaves up the stem are a dead give away. They are just standing up more than most portulaca. Moss rose may be the variety and standing more than trailing across the ground may be a characteristic of that variety. They are beautiful and I would keep saving seeds. If I had them that's what I would do

This is Portulaca grandiflora (called Moss Rose). There are many, many hybrids of this great self-seeding, annual plant. If you sow the seeds of this plant, because it is a hybrid, you are not likely to get more of the same, but a pretty mixture exemplifying the genetic make-up of this great plant.

The other portulaca that many are familiar with is Portulaca olercea (purslane), a species that has produced some of our favorite hybrids, as well. The foliage of this one is broad and flat while the former is needle-like. It (P. olercea) is often sold as hanging baskets.

The peppermint pink name is right, I could remember that but couldn't remember the name that the stick said. I've kept most of the sticks from what I bought, but who knows where that one is. :)

We have thousands of these 'moss roses' or portulaca. They have been reseeding themselves for around 10 years. They go down the front of our driveway bed and then around the sidewalk out to the driveway in front of the garage. My dh likes them but he gets a little panicky when they start popping up in the farm yard here and there down to the barn and around the machine sheds. And this is in full sun and lots of gravel. No water unless it rains. All colors. I try to tell him they are better than the wild purselane that grows all around here and is a pest in the veggie garden.

We had these at the farm where I lived as a child in SD. One flower we never had to plant and could always rely on.

I only have them planted in containers right now, so I'm gathering the seeds so I can plant them where I want next year. My seed count climbs fast with these, thats for sure. Here's hoping they bloom for me. I'd be glad to share my seeds if I get enough, I'm but so worried they wouldn't bloom and then I'd feel terrible!

Yes its Portulaca. But I have another name called to that beautiful flower. My grandmother use to call it Vietnam rose.
