There are two main types of underground growth in bamboo as determined by the root, or 'rhizome' structure. There are 'clumpers' and 'runners'. Your picture shows stems (culms) arising from the exposed rhizomes of a clumping species.

Thanks! Is there a website about bamboo? I have two bamboos. One big one small. I want to make a bonsai like that.

One more question to Tapla. To make a bonsai like that. Shall I cut the new growth to one jiont or shall I cut the roots to one jiont?

Sorry I really have no any knowledge of bamboo.

Thanks!

The planting in your picture is simply a piece of bamboo rhizome from a clump of bamboo. It was likely planted in a deeper container until the rhizomes established & the culms appeared. Then, some soil was removed to give it the effect seen in the photo. Grass, a very close relative of bamboo, grows in similar fashion.

I don't know all that much about bamboo, but there is a forum on GW devoted to discussion of the plants. See link.

Here is a link that might be useful: C'mon! I'll take you to the bamboo forum. ;o)

Thank you Al. That helps.
