bulbs not sprouting yet...

I planted 13 oriental lily bulbs the first week of June. Only 3 have sprouted yet. The three that sprouted are doing great! They were good quality bulbs planted right away after I received them from Wayside Gardens. I was afraid I would do more damage than good if I used bulb booster - so I didn't use any.

Now I am afraid the remaining 10 are not going to come up. If they don't come up this summer will they survive the winter? Do you think it would be ok to dig them up and add bulb booster now? What should I do?

Thanks, Dawn

Bulb booster will not solve anything...
I would call Wayside and see what they say...
Seems to me that June 1st is a little late to be planting lilies....but...
Are all other things good? Drainage? good? Watering some? Critters dig them up?
    Tis a puzzle!

Hi Linda, yes, I have been watering now and then. It has been a really dry summer so far but I think they have had enough water because the 3 that came up are doing great. Everything elese in the bed is good too. I ordered the bulbs in May but they didn't ship right away. I have kept a really close eye on the critters and nothing has been bothering that bed - if it were in the back yard I would think the squirrels had done some damage but this bed is right next to the porch so it has been easy to monitor.

I will give Wayside a call and see what they say. That was a good idea. Thanks!

How deep did you plant them? When I plant Lilies that late, I always plant them more shallow than recommended 6-8" deep. Otherwise, they struggle to come up. Healthy Lilies pull themselves down with their roots later in the season.
I would carefully dig one bulb up and see what happened. If the dranaige is not good enough, they might rot. If the bulbs have sprouts that did not reach soil surface, I would very carefully replant them more shallow. In such case they will not bloom this year probably, but green stems and leaves will help them gain some strenght for the next season. Also, late planting stress bulbs, so they might decide to skip a year. Again, you might check if you Lilies are healthy digging one up.

I plant my lily bulbs sideways--so water does not get caught in their scales. They know which way is up & don't have a problem with sideways. I also mix in tbl. or 2 bone meal when planting.

I order mine from Brent & Becky or Scheepers, not Wayside Gardens. I have had some trouble with the latter & if you read the Garden Watchdog, you'll see I'm not the only one.

By now yours either came up or didn't---as Alina said, if they did not bloom but made green leaves, they will do better next year.

have 6 from brent and beckys that were amazing this year. My first time with them...soo very pleased. What should be done to ensure a good winer for the oriental lillies?!! The petals just recently dropped.. i'm sad :(

I planted 6 bulbs in sept oct to grow indoors until in season.. but I’m only seeing root sprouts no green, no stems or leaves.. should I re soil them?

Hu many numbers. I suggest you start your own thread and state what bulbs you are talking about, how you have treated them thus far and explain what you mean by “grow indoors until in season”.
