Petunias dying

HELP! My mother is going to replant petunias for the THIRD time because they keep dying on her (persistent, isn't she?). She says they just wither up and die, no leave browning, no spots, no yellowing. The whole thing begins to wilt and they die. They are planted in a somewhat raised bed, rather sandy soil (but she ammends it), and there are other perinials planted around. She lost a few of those too. We've had a very wet summer so far, hot and humid as well. Are they too wet?

Her tomato plants bit the dust too, same reason I think.

Any thoughts or confirmation of my ideas?

Thanks!
