They need at least four hours of good sunlight in the day. More is better.

And starved. In this zone they do exceptionally well (weed status) in river shingle, sand, silt, that either hold or give good access to water over the growing-flowering time of summer-autumn.

They'll grow under trees but you end up with something more like vigorous grass than a swathe of flowers.

They also like to get their corms well settled before moving on to flower. Some might be generous enough to flower first time, but I'd be looking more at a performance next year.

Probably the corms were too young. They should flower next year. In my garden they flower well without much direct sun (a few hours a day at best).
