Take your nose out to the garden in the cool of the evening and you will probably be quite impressed. ;-)

I haven't grown the deep purple kind, but I have grown several others. I found that the taller white types smell the strongest, in my opinion. I bought seed for a tall red one, that said it was highly fragrant,but I can't smell anything, even at night. But, the white ones I had last year reseeded everywhere, these are up, growing and smell wonderful. I hsve some short nicotiana domino pink also, very pretty but scentless. I definitely want to grow perfume deep purple next year. Even without scent, nicotiana is a great plant. It blooms in sun or partial shade, stands drought or heavy rain, and blooms heavily all summer. The scent is just another bonus.

You're right rhizo! I guess I was just trying to smell them too early in the evening. Was out later than usual and they certainly have a lovely fragrance but like hpny2 said, the old fashioned white has the strongest fragrance. The purple is definately a lovely color anyway and I will certainly grow these again next year. They are very easy to grow from seed and even though I started them very late for my zone they quickly grew to blooming size.
