Petunias fading

Every year this happens about this time: My wife has petunias palnted in containers on our deck and after looking great through June, the plants' leaves start getting smaller and yellow green in color.

She waters when the top two inches becoem dry and deadheads every couple days.

Any clue to perk them up? Fertilizer? Cutting back?
