re-seeding annuals

I read somewhere that annuals will re-seed better if you harvest mature seed, and sew it yourself in March. Has anyone experimented with this? I suppose if you just sprinkle them when you harvest in the early fall, some seeds might germinate then die over the winter. Or maybe some seeds can't survive the deep freeze?
