Moonflower

I recently recieved some moonflower seeds and I couldn't wait until next year to plant them (I live in Z5... northern Ohio). I planted some in a little pot that came in a tray with 28 of them. They are all 2.5 inches deep, and round. I put 3 moonflower seeds in one pot thinking that I would probably on have one or two come up. Well, I had one come uo and it's maybe an inch and a half tall now, but now the other two are coming up. One is still 'stretching' it's leaves and the other one is just breaking through the soil. The first one however, isn't looking real well. It's is becoming very wilted and one of it's roots is starting to come out of a hole on the bottom of the pot. I put it in a little tray with some water to see if that will help it. Does anyone know if it could be that it's getting crowded now that the other two are coming up? If so, should I let all three of them to continue to grow in there and just see if I can get one to survive? Or, should I try taking them out of there and putting all three in seperate pots, and if so, how long should I wait to do that? I think if I did it now, the one starting to break through the soil will die. Any suggestions or ideas??

Hi there. It's best not to transplant stuff until they have 4 true leaves (so you should see 6 altogether, including the 2 little starter leaves - cotyledons - that appear first). I think you ought to wait and see what happens. But where are you going to plant these once they're up and running? Are you going to try to grow these indoors over the winter? I have moonflowers this year for the first time and mine are just about to bloom. Maureen

Hi Matt,
Can you take a sharp carpet knife and cut the bottom out of that little pot? If so, do it and sink the pot in the ground where the Moonflower can vine up on something thin. This way the roots can go into the soil and not be as crowded. Hope you will get to see them bloom before frost hits. Mine are open today because it is overcast here. They are so beautiful! Well, I think what I might do is wait to see if one of them pulls ahead and does really well. I took one out of there because it looked like it was about dead so I thought I'd just take it out so there is more room. If they start to get worse, then I'll try your idea Tina. I was driving around for work today and looked and saw that someone had one out by their mailbox that was in bloom. It looked very nice!

A friend gave me moonflower seeds last year, and I really enjoyed the fragrant blooms last year. What I didn't know was that they reseeded this year. What a surprise...or did I luck out for them to reseed? Anyway, they are about done blooming too and I'm also from Ohio.(North of Dayton)
