Snapdragons Care (Help)

Just bought a few Snapdragons. I know they don't like the heat and lately here in Maryland, it's been very hot and humid. In the late afternoon when the heat is at its peak, I bring them into the house to cool off a bit with the AC. I know they need full sun, but the heat just causes them to wilt (until they've recovered from the cooler temps indoors). I'm also watering them as I should.

Is there any way to deal with this? Should I leave them out in the full sun or just shade (or in partial shade)?

Any advice would be welcomed as I'm a newbie gardener.

the stock you bought.. this time of year.. is probably horribly root bound.. and therefore.. you cant provide enough water to them.. during the heat of the day ...

i am surprised they are for sale.. as i expect those in my area .. to be frosted to the ground inside 30 days or so ...

are they hardy in your zone????

Christy, I usually make the choice of leaving the cold hardy plants at the garden center if it's too hot. Let them take care of the plants....and wait for fresh plants when the temperatures cool down.

Are you going to plant them in the ground or a container?

In many locations, snaps are common in the garden centers with other cold hardy plants, like pansies, sweet alyssum, etc. They will be a brand new crop, grown especially for the fall growing season. Snaps are almost as cold hardy as pansies, certainly fine through light frosts.

Ken, I guess you'll be surprised to know that pansies are considered a winter crop in many locations. We experience temperatures in the single and double digits all winter long. The plants look a little forlorn during those times but perk up like crazy when it's above freezing.

I guess it depends where you are....

Anything at my nurseries was grown in the spring and sat till now.

So I agree with both of you since we don't know. One can't assume your in a high volume market that will actually seed for fall plants.

Here i just bought (65% off) snaps, petunias, and viola's two weeks ago that I have root pruned and planted recently that are now happy about the cooler temps.

Tis the season here for cool crops to be arriving in the Garden Centers - pansies, snaps, stock, ornamental kale...since OP is in MD, it is safe to say that it is fresh stock. You should be able to leave them out, now that a cold front has moved through and we aren't in the 90's any more. If you aren't planting in the ground, if we get another heat wave, try moving them into the shade during the hottest point of the day
