Now, this is fascinating! I sat under my crape myrtle yesterday morning, sowing pansies in flats, and several times I was convinced it was starting to rain. It was the tree. I wondered what that was! Thanks, rhizo.

donnabaskets....I absolutely HATE to be the bearer of bad news. Especially since I like you so much! BUT!

Crape myrtles don't guttate. This is a 'talent' reserved for some plant families and by no means the majority.

However, it's fairly common to feel a bit of a mist when under the canopy of a crape myrtle. I've felt it many times myself. What you are feeling is the release of honeydew from an infestation of aphids or leaf hoppers, or both. Droplets usually mean leaf hoppers. If you taste the droplets, you might find that they are rather sweet.

I've tried to get lots of people to taste honey dew but haven't had any takers, yet.

Of course, what you felt could simply be dew, condensing then dripping from the leaves.

My elephant ear did that as well when it grew in the garden. Last week I dug up the bulb, storing it and planting again in the spring. Correct me if I am wrong but are those plants poisonous? If I am correct, those droplets would be poisonous as well!

The plants are somewhat toxic, but I don't expect that the water droplets would be. The drops aren't sap or plant juices, they are water.

So...how toxic is the plant itself???
