Pruning back red salvia

My salvia was beautiful but now it has gotten leggy (no leaves on the bottom. Is it possible to cut it back now and bring it back to a lush plant with new leaves and flowers? I have been thinking of pulling it up but if it's possible to save it for another couple of months with cutting back, I will do that.
