sunflowers from birdfeed

Next year, I would like to grow a large section of sunflowers to form a hedge. The actual appearance of the bloom isn't important, just that I have mid-heighth flowers (5 feet). To be cheap, can't I just buy a bag of black-oil sunflower seeds that are meant to be fed to birds? I should get thousands of seeds for the same price as a few dozen seeds in a package. Will they bloom like all other sunflower seeds?

We always get volunteers underneath our birdfeeders. I don't see why not. Can't hurt- especially for the price!

(for the record, though, ours tend to be dwarf-size, not reaching more than 12-18", BUT others may have diff't experiences.)

The black oil seed sunflowers sown accidentally by birds behind our garden shed (so pretty, we're going to do it again) were all about 5 feet in height. I think that these sunflowers don't get as tall as the non-oil sunflowers.

It was the first time I had been able to observe developing sunflowers in person. What a pollinator magnet! Never seen so many bees (for example) on one plant in my life!
