Crocosmia Put On New Growth

Since I re-arranged my flower beds, I had to dig out and re-plant the crocosmia. The bulbs were tiny since they have not been divided for a long time.

To my surprise, they have put out a lot of top growth. I hope they will have time to build the energy and store the energy. I think I'll need to mulch them for the winter. They have been very winter hardy and I never lost any plants, as far as I know.

If it is a hardier cultivar you have nothing to worry about.
'Lucifer', 'Distant Sun', etc. are probably indestructible in zn 6.
OTOH I had a tender, showier cultivar way back when...was from Wayside and probably imported from Holland. Was labelled Jenny Bloom but really might have been any of the zn 7-ish hardy English cultivars. The terrible winter of 1994 killed the whole patch of them.

I believe they are Lucifer. I've had them for 10 years and just divided them the first time. They were too crowded and did not flower well. Now they have their own bed.

I'll probably just light mulch them for the winter.
