I tried this for the first time last year and what worked for me was simply chucking what had become enormous tubers on top of an uncovered bucketful of glads and caladium in my cool (55º-60º), dry basement. I planted them in the back of my perennial beds this spring once it got warm not expecting much but they were huge and flowed throughout the bed by the end of summer. Trying it again this winter w/ the same tubers.

Ooohhhh. So glad to hear this. I have tons of them in my front planter. I had thought about digging up, or pulling up the tubers and storing dry, and now that I know it works, I'm going to do it.

I am going to over winter mine too. Do you mean they don't have to be in darkness or peat moss or anything? What keeps them from rotting or shriveling I wonder. Anyone know the answers?

They are potatoes, so treat them as such.
Dig, wash, let dry and store in cool, dry space.
Dry peat moss will help to absorb extra moisture from the air. If tubers are fairly large, in spring you could cut them in 1/2 or 1/3 and plant separately. They'll grow.
You also may start them indoor in early March. They'll sprout in 5 to 6 weeks, but would need a bright light as soon as they are out of the ground and then gradual acclimatisation to outdoor conditions.
