Sunflowers and bees

Hi, I'm new to this forum, and have a question about sunflowers. I planted some 3' tall ones this summer in the garden and they looked very nice, but by the end of the summer were covered with bumblebees and yellow jackets. They looked like they were sleeping right under the flowers. The bumblebees got the flowers and the yellow jackets looked like they got stuck with the upper stems :) The bumblebees are fine, I like them in the garden, but the yellow jackets were a surprise. Has anyone else noticed this?

At least the yellow jackets seemed happy and didn't bother me, unlike most summers. They also liked to "hang out" on the butterfly bushes. Every year they're a problem, but this year (first year gardening) they were a lot more docile. I think I'll plant the sunflowers again next year!
