Calendula is very cold hardy and often planted for winter color in warmer climates. I don't know what the temperature range is in your Sunset zone (Care to share that information....or your location?

I used to plant calendula in the fall when I lived in USDA zone 8. The plants would easily take frosts and mildly freezing temperatures. What they could not tolerate was the heat.

My zone as displayed by GW got hung-up in 2001 and I cannot change it. Attempts to edit give me an error message.

Locals tell me this is Sunset zone 2b.

I love calendula for it's carefree bright colors that last until nearly the first snow. I haven't grown them in my new garden, yet, but I think I'll add them back in next spring. They're very drought tolerant, also.

This is good to hear - I have some seed that I'm planning on sowing next season, have never grown these before.

My Calendula withstood 24 days of lows below freezing but one low below zero and a day below freezing finished them off for the season.
