Sunflowers

Last summer we grew sunflowers from a pack of seeds. At the end of the season, we lopped off the heads and let them dry before harvesting seeds. Will these seeds be viable if I plant them in the spring? At the moment they are sitting in a jar on the counter.

probably.. you could get one out.. and dissect it.. to see if there is a kernel in there ...

that said.. understand that thru genetics.. you most likely.. will not end up with what you planted .. if form or color are important .... you rebuy the pack of seeds ....

you will have derivations of mom and dad of the cultivar you planted .. with whatever pollinated it on top of that ...

Most likely you will have viable seed if they are plump seeds when dried. They may not come true depending on what is being grown in your area, but fortunately you should have plenty of fat dry seeds; enough to germ a few in a paper towel to test them out.
