any suggestions?

This is the front yard of my new house. It is facing north and as you can see, the foundation gets partial morning sun while the rest gets full sun. In the shadows to the left is a very large crepe myrtle (keep!) that needs a good pruning and a river birch (cut?) that has outgrown it's location.

The first thing I would like to tackle is the foundation planting. It is dominated by a boring collection of American hollies. Also sprinkled in the mix is one azalea, three boxwoods and a lonely globe arborvitae.

To me, it feels like it needs some height and some color. I was thinking about tucking a upright cedar/juniper/boxwood in the corner between garage and front window. I would also like to incorporate some type of cascading Japanese maple.

Some design/plant suggestions would be great. Something that can 'punch' up the curb appeal! Thanks
