That design would be fine for a leaf mold, but it has some drawbacks as a compost bin that gets its compost turned. I'm trying to imagine how the compost gets turned ones it is filled.

Hi Idaho Gardener - you don't need to turn the compost. Just fill with successive layers of mature (dry materials), green materials and soil with 45% mature, 45 green and 10% soil, watering as you add each layer. The technique is the one outlined by John Jeavons in "How to Grow More Vegetables..."

I'm with you Idaho Gardener. If I were so inclined to actually measure 45%-45%-10% layering and watering, I bet I'd probably build a sturdier composter. Oh wait.. I did. And I love mine.

Not trying to be snarky. I promise.

Thank you for posting the design! The promise of only 30 minutes is extremely enticing!

HI Erin:
I don't measure compost materials, I eyeball it based on Jeavon's general recommendation.

If you, or anyone else on GardenWeb, have a composter design you like, let me know about it (info, photos etc.) and I'd be happy to share that information with my blog readers. Just send the infromation to my e-mail address (HMDelman@yahoo.com) and let me know if you want your name mentioned or prefer to be anonymous.

There's more than one way to skin a cat and my readers might like your design better or decide to incorporate some aspects of your design and some of mine etc. That's what makes GardenWeb great-- we learn from each other.

Thanks much.
