I'd use some off color--like blue or green--instead of red, though. Chickens instinctively peck at blood, and could easily start another's foot bleeding if the nails are painted red. I don't think that actually wearing nail polish would hurt them in terms of them absorbing anything harmful. I'd also suggest quick-dry polish to avoid getting it all over their feathers. And watch the fumes!

It may not stay on long. We used to paint my mom's poodle's nails when we were kids and it only lasted about a week, then was completely gone.

I am thinking about leg tags. I may want to mark a couple that turn out to be exceptional brooders and mothers, if I get one.

We've painted our parrot's nails from time to time, and it never hurt him any. Sometimes he'd mess with it before it dried, though.
