Coffee Cans & Veggies

Hi! I've lurked here from time to time but am an infrequent poster. I'm a veggie gardener. I was interested in doing some container gardening and have saved up some small coffee cans for planting. What veggies will grow well in the smaller coffee cans (5-6 inches in height)?

I also wanted to put some tomatoes, peppers and eggplants in containers. What size should they be? Need frugal ideas for containers for these. Thank you!

The small coffee cans would be great for starting plants but it doesn't take long for them to outgrow something that size...for the veggies you mentioned, you really need sizable containers....check google for grow type boxes...and you will see what I mean...A pepper plant might be OK say in a 5 gallon container but you need something much bigger than that for a tomato plant ...

And let me add another question to this one. Metal coffee cans rust. Does that harm the plants that grow in them? I started some lettuce in some coffee cans and when I transplanted them and emptied the cans, they were rusty around the area where I'd cut drainage holes.
