I use what I use on myself on my horses Neutrogena UVA/UVB 45 sunscreen. I tried it on my white nosed dog but she licks it off.

I would go for the cheap No-Ad sunscreen, comes in very high SPF numbers. You get a lot for less money. I buy the Nutrogena for ME, still is very expensive. For the quantity needed, applied often on horse, Nutrogena is way too expensive, only comes in small bottles. The No-Ad or cheap stuff with high SPF numbers does a good job at shows, my most common need for sunscreen.

I have used the cheap stuff on my white nosed horse for years, works well. However horse often rubs it off, so must be reapplied often, just like on people. Ok at a show you are already at, a pain out in the field.

I think the horse fly mask with a nose shield is called Cashel's Crusader-Long model. You should be able to locate it in a horse supply catalog or at tack stores. Has an additional piece from below the eyes to hang over nostrils, but not cover them. Easy to graze in.

Fly masks are good for pastured horses if their companions leave them alone. Mares are usually good, but geldings have WAYY TOO MUCH fun pulling them off each other in play.

The blue-eyed horses have a much easier time with a fly mask, along with the horse who has a white skin on face or head to burn.

Don't leave masks on overnight. Often the quietest horse will get really stupid when he can't see in the dark. My nice horses think the wolves are out hunting, VERY HARD to catch to remove the masks in dark. Willing to fight if they can't see. Others have spooked and run thru fences, hurt themselves.

You hear folks who never take the masks off, but I DON'T recommend leaving masks on in dusk or at night. You should check horse daily to ensure he is not being rubbed or has bugs inside the mask, ticks under.

I turn my horses out at night, just avoid the sun problem and BIG flies, altogether. Good Luck with a solution.

Don't bother with sunscreen. Get one of those big, old floppy straw hats, cut holes for the ears.... *L*

Sorry. I burst out laughing at the mental image. :) To be serious, I'd go with a kid's sunblock, maybe the 'Coppertone Water Babies' that is non-toxic. I use it on my daughter and it's fairly non-greasy. If it's safe for babies, who put everything in their mouths, it out to be good for horses.

Plus, get him a big ol' pair of sunglasses, like those novelty ones you see at the county fair! *L*
