As an environmental chemist specializing in hazardous wastes and toxic residues in soil, my opinion is it's not a significant risk compared to other environmental risks. The reasons, simply stated, are that, first, plasticizers are not all toxic, although there are a few that are and some others are questionable. But mainly, there are too many transfer steps involved to give you a significant dose. The stuff has to leach out of the plastic into the soil, which obviously happens slowly. It is then diluted by the soil. Some is biodegraded and some simply sticks strongly to the soil. Possibly some is taken up by plants, but it is likely to be only a tiny fraction or none at all since they aren't nutrients needed by the plant. THEN, the plant would have to selectively deposit the chemical into the part you eat. Finally, you'd have to consume enough of that to get a significant dose. I don't have quantitative proof, but suffice it to say it's a pretty big stretch. Our surroundings are full of plastics and we likely are exposed to much higher levels through daily dermal contact, eating and drinking and inhalation. Just my two cents. I do try to minimize toxins in my garden, but it's all about the dose.
