That's exactly what I use for winter sowing. They're great!

I'm going to try this, in fact, I've been saving the rolls and I only hope that I get to it before my husband finds my stash and throws them all away. lol

I also use them out in the garden to 'mark' where I have planted seed. I simply cut them in half, bury them in the garden so that they stick up about 1" above the soil and plant the seed in the center.

This helps me distinguish my plantings from weeds and keeps me from covering my plantings with mulch. I am able to get mulch down much earlier (thus I get fewer weeds). I believe it also helps with cutworms. I haven't lost one planted this way to cutworms.

I have been using them both for starting seeds, which I suck at, and propagating cuttings, which I have much better success with. For cuttings I cut the tubes in half and put them in the bottom half of a plastic milk jug. When I feel fairly certain a plant is well rooted in its tube, I pull the entire tube and move the plant to it's own pot.

These turned out to be great protection for mailing a package of cuttings to a friend. Any I can't find a use for go into the compost.

I'm going to try something similar this year. I have a bunch of used but good paper yard waste bags that I saved. I'm going to use toilet roll cores and wrap the double layer of brown paper around the core twice, giving me four layers of paper. Fold up the bottoms, and I've got something similar to newspaper pots. Then I'll stick them in trays to hold them upright.
