Mone..what do you have your containers sitting on that looks like wood? Are they outdoors? Yes, those are nice, deep containers and I see cookies and cakes in those at our grocery store all the time. I'm trying to limit myself to 1/2 gal. milk jugs this year simply because we only use that size and I don't have to go looking through people's recycle plus I don't have room for storage. I had set myself a goal this year of only sowing 36 1/2 gal. jugs as that is how many plastic milk crates I had last year but the other day I went to take clothing to our local Thrift shop and there were 2 milk crates outdoors and usually anything that is left outdoors, they haul away or give away, so I asked one of the staff what they were going to do with those milk crates and hoping he would say You can have them if you want them, we were going to pitch them in the dumpster but he said you can buy them for $1 each and I quickly said SOLD! and reached into my wallet for the $2 and left a happy camper! Each milk crate will hold 9 (1/2 gal. jugs)perfectly. I've even got the canned spray paint just for plastics to spray paint them after the holidays so they will blend in with color of siding, so we won't be reported as having yard junk. Right now, they are royal blue, red, black and white but won't be for long. I just hope the paint will dry in this cold weather but we plan to spray paint them in the garage, will hook up our electic heater to keep us warm and help them dry quicker too. Will move both vehicles out of garage when we spray paint. Krylon has a special paint just for plastics that the Ace hardware owner ordered for me that he says is good just for plastics and he sells a lot of that brand but was out of a light gray.

Tho I have become leery of plastic lately - from all the info of the toxic chemicals 'leaching' ~

I stopped using my plastic water bottle a few years ago, but I can't really see any danger of leeching in the short amount of time that seedlings will be in the starter trays. I get spinach and lettuce in those big plastic containers (when I can bring myself to pay crack prices for greens). Also, if you still get eggs in cardboard, you got spots for 12 seedlings in compostable packaging.
