Are you talking about the bags that hang upside down? If so then yes, they do work.
Don't see why they can't be used for plants other than veggies.
They got so popular around here this spring and summer, they were very hard to find.

If you're referring to the Topsy-Turvy bag, then no.

Because the plug n' gro bag is supposed to be more "advanced" than the topsy-turvy bag, by allowing you to grow more than just one plant per bag.

Which is why I'm wondering if there's any drawbacks I should be made aware of.

Like, is the plug n' gro a "jack-of-all-trades but master of none?

I did two "upside down" bags for tomatoes this year, and really did not get the results I wanted. First of all, I had to hang them up quite high, because the tomato vines hung down so far, and that made them difficult for me to water. And secondly, and perhaps most important, they just didn't produce the amount of tomatoes I would normally get from a plant in the ground. I just don't think the bag allowed the tomato to develop enough of a root system to produce really well. Having said that, I could see where OTHER plants could do well. I'm thinking of things that don't produce long vines or require large root systems. Next year I'm going to put flowers in those bags -- I'm thinking begonias -- and perhaps also plant herbs in the top, since it's open (at least in my 'version' of the upside down bag) and things like chives or parsley shouldn't take up so much root space. Keeping them at a lower level will also allow me to water and fertilize easily. I would think that if you're putting several plants into one bag, you really need to think about how much root space each will need, and whether their sun, water and fertilizer requirements are about the same.
