we are looking to do this to our basement ceiling since we have a very old house and low ceilings in our basement. What was the process involved in preparing the ceiling for paint and what kind of paint/color was used? THanks

There was virtually no prep work that I am aware of. We had a professional painter spray it. He just came in and they sprayed for a couple of coats. I would definitely consult a professional if you're considering tackling it yourself. The color was black, which was a really hard choice for us to make. We were worried it would be too dark. However, I was able to view another basement with a ceiling done this way and, as our painter told us, it seems to make the ceiling disappear, not feel closed in. I think the white of the paneling may help in that area, too, though. We have no regrets. We were also considering a dark brown or a silverish duct work looking color.

Our home is over 100 years old and the basement ceiling is very low so we wanted to get alternate options other than the standard drop or drywall ceiling.

The ceilings are 8-9 feet (or normal......whatever that is). I just spoke to him and he is only able to do drawings, but not the GC portion of a job anymore. He was self-employed, but now, apparently, works for someone. Do you have an email I can reach you at to give you his name and cell? I can't figure out a way to privately exchange info. Any ideas?

Is it okay to paint plumbing? A plumber once told me water pipes shouldn't be painted because sometimes a blow torch is used to cut them, and paint is flammable. Maybe paints are different these days?

Heidi, love your basement. I think I am using all your ideas for our own. We have a low budget- I am sure the built in's are the priciest area? Did you have to get HVAC or use upstairs? Our ceilings are super low in some areas and not too bad in others- was yours low?
