Pruning new apples

I just received a bareroot Mutsu apple tree from Trees of Antiquity. It has very nice laterals with wide angles, but the problem is that they are only eight to ten inches or so above the graft union. Is it okay if I leave them as the permanent scaffolds? It seems like a shame to cut off four perfectly positioned and angled branches.
