I have seen the second one many times in the past, but I have never seen anything like the first one.

The first one looks like the ones we have all over the place around our house (outside) these days (every year they "visit" us).
I believe it is either Araneus quadratus or A. diadematus.
This site has pix of both.
They seem to like to make their webs over wide expanses (from house to bush or from tree to tree), which means we usually run into them when walking in the yard. Yuck!

I'm pretty sure the 2nd one is an Argiope.
