Never been pruned apple trees

A common story: I have purchased a home with overgrown apple trees. My two trees (a macintosh and a golden delicious looking variety) were planted close together--15 feet-- about 45 years ago. They are hunormouse and intertwined. One dominates the other. ! I'd say they are 50 feet and never been pruned. They produce a great many apples every other year and are of course inedible and unreachable. So the advice I need is, should I cut them down and start from scratch? I understand I can't just hack them down to desired size, but need to only take off 20% each year. Worth the time, effort, expense (they are way too big to prune myself)?

Thanks so much for your advice.
