Not only dose my sister have the same problem as you, but hers never really ever developes into a white bloom.
It stays green for a week or two then turns brown and dies off.
Wonder what your problem could be, and if it could be the same as hers.

hopefulauthor, it looks like the bud has already unfurled -it's just that it's a very miniature version of a full flower, and doesn't seem to want to get any bigger :) On that note though, I do have another (tiny) flower on there that is still tightly furled, and doesn't seem to want to unfurl at all (also been a week).

meyermike, the flowers are white rather than green and haven't died yet, but now i'm getting a bit worried! has your sister managed to get any tips on why her flowers do that?

Mine take more than a week to fully open, maybe more. When I notice the "white" swollen spot in the foliage, I keep an eye on it and if I remember right, it does take some time for them to fully open.

As for staying small??? I'm not sure. Mine do turn green after they have been open for a long time (say several weeks) and they do turn brown and finally die.

To get mine to flower, I went against the common info and sat it in front of a west facing window where it gets 4-5 hours of full, direct sunlight everyday. I carry it to the tub every 10-15 days for a good soaking. It blooms about 4 times a year for me. heres a pic.
