Thinner,lighter,denser.......

After working for several months with Mymud and detail mesh(EIFS for our American friends),I'm going to say that the experiences have all been fantastic and this will continue to be my area in this medium.

Laura and I have written on several occasions in this forum about, firstly, her work with detail mesh and Quikwall, and, secondly, mine with detail mesh and my own formula, laid out in earlier posts.

Here's my results to date(much more to come in the future):

Balls-I've made 12 inch and 26 inch hollow balls. The smaller has had water in it for about 5 months with no problems. The bigger one weighs only 14 lbs!

Masks-by using my formula and detail mesh,I only had to line the mold.this gave it the concrete look and feel, but, instead of 30 lbs,I'm down to 3!

Septic tank covers-for anyone living in the country, tanks are a way of life,as are the cleanout accesses.Well,I've just finished a cover that has a single layer of mesh and mud, with a covering layer of coarser material to look more like the rocks in our area. The weight is around 40 lbs,so can still be installed and easily lifted when the need arises.

Bowls-less success here,as I tried to go VERY thin walled,to a 1/4 inch.Cracking occured when I tried to mechanically sand the finish.I'm still going to use the concept, but add an interesting surface covering on the outside, such as a coarse layer then reduce it with acid.

Obsevations-Some have made mention of how sticky my formula is,and how messy.Well, the messiness I can live with and the stickiness works very well with my work.It has virtually no slump,so I can do steep to vertical pieces without the mix sliding.I even did a ball in one session,so the mix was upside down, and still stayed in place!

I'm getting what I want-thin,dense and light concrete products.Buyer response has been good. And,I've only scratched the surface of this area.I'm sorry about the lack of photos, but, you know why I won't post them here.

For those of you interested in using pozzolans, try www.vitrominerals.com for good, easy to read descriptions of what they are and what they can do.I'll be working with metakaolins in a couple of weeks and I'll let you know the results.

Cheers from here

Rick
