Embedding stones in hypertufa

In the past I have made a few hypertufa planters using sand instead of perlite, but they were very heavy.
This time I would like to use perlite in the mixture and also use some cement colorant.
For last few weeks I have been collecting beautiful river rocks and pebbles and small pieces of driftwood to decorate my planters. I need to coat the stones with some sort of varnish to keep them shiny, this way they will reveal their textural beauty.
Do I coat the rocks before embedding them in hypertufa planter or after I push them into the planter wall? Do I need to use bonding agent to keep the rocks and driftwood from falling out?
Any suggestion on type of the varnish I should use? Do I let the hypertufa planter dry a little bit before I push the stones in itâÂÂs wall.
Thanks for your help.
