pruning questions

came across an excellent write up on the web. (I think form Univ. of Virginia.)

it's the 1st one I've come across that talked specifically about cutting off branches below a certain height.

I have about 50 apple trees that have been in place for 1 year and 50 more cherry that have been in the ground for a month. apples on semi-dwarf stock, cherries on Mazzard.

I have many trees of both types that have branches lower than to 30" min recommended. from previous reading I was under the impression that for the 1st couple of years only minor pruning was recommended to allow the tree to establish a good root base.

this new write up says to cut them back to a single stick and essenentially start over if branches are too low.

questions: is this agressive pruning approach the best way?

2. if yes, when is next time it would be "safe" to do agressive pruning as called for.

as always thx in advance for any help.
