I've been searching fruitlessly for vermiculite for months now, managing to score a small bag now and then from the odd garden department. I've looked for it as insulation, landscaping material, chicken grit, and every other format that's been suggested, to no avail. It simply seems to be unavailable in this area. Usually I'm just told that "we don't carry it" with no reasons given, but today I was at Fred Meyer (a department store chain we have here in the NW) and asked someone in the garden department when they would be getting more in, and she told me they've discontinued it because it contains asbestos.
Has anyone else heard this? It seems really strange to me; I'm thinking that it's old news come back to haunt us. In 1990 they found asbestos in the mine that was being used to produce Zonolite vermiculite, but that's ancient history now. I've been scouring the Web for any indication of a new discovery of asbestos contamination, and have turned up no new alarms. This website lists testing of all of the world's major sources of vermiculite up through September of last year, with no problems... and This report says that there's no significant danger from asbestos in vermiculite.
At any rate... although Oregon seems to have become a vermiculite-free zone, I was up near Seattle today and scored a couple of small bags at Lowe's (they had plenty, but I've got tuition to pay so I had to be conservative), so my hypertufa cravings can continue to be satiated for the moment!
