Help with mold

I remember reading on here (about a year ago) about someone who used kids non drying modeling clay to sculpt a face and making a mold out of it. I think she used pam as a release agent and it melted. What I dont know is if she was sucessfull later on without the pam.

I want to do the same thing with a plaster cast of my childrens face. I have the plaster cast done and tried to use clay from the craft store but it was air dryable and shrunk adn cracked horrible.

Does anyone remember that post and how to prepare the modeling clay before you make a mold.

I have liquid latex rubber to make the mold out of (tried silicone caulk once was not pretty) Does anyone know if/how I would go about preparing.

Hi Carey --- Because of the compatibility issues between various materials, homegrown release agents can be a blessing or a curse. Whether they are used on the original or the mold. With stuff like Pam the only way to know is to test it before you try it on anything of importance or verify with another crafter who has used it exactly the same way you will.

As for some pretty good basic info on model prep, mold making & casting...check out the Reynolds website. They carry a full range of supplies and have several nice basic tutorials there. I have even given them a few calls when I've had an issue or concern and they have always been very helpful even when the answer didn't involve selling me any of their products. You might also Goggle the Smooth-On website, they are a manufacturer.
