sign i did something wrong?

i made a bowl a few weeks ago, left it to cure for a couple weeks under plastic with daily spritzing - as of yesterday it was still pliable to the touch and some parts of the edge were breaking off rather easily. so i'm guessing that once it's dry it's going to be too brittle to use and will just come apart. soooo... too much peat? i used peat, vermiculite, and portland cement in the 1.5/1.5/1 ratio. i made another batch a week later using the 1/1/1 ratio (and perlite instead of vermiculite) and it's good and hard (still curing). we've had a stretch of hot and humid weather lately so i don't know if that had any impact on the first batch. anyway, any insights you old hands might have would be much appreciated.
