EIG, I dont know if it's a great way, but I've polished concrete like I do stone, with diamond pads or paper. You work your way up through the grit sizes until you get the polish you want. Some peoples polish is another persons honed (matte) finish. You could use silicone carbide "wet/dry" sandpaper with water but you will go through quite a bit of it. Diamond pads or sandpaper, while costly up front will be more economical in the end.

I have bought some decent diamond products on ebay, but be careful. With the huge influx from the Aisian markets there are plenty of inferior products out there.

I use air powered tools, diamond pad system (bought on ebay) and water to get factory type finishes. Water is a key component as it lengthens the life of your diamonds. Heat generated, even by hand sanding, will not harm the diamonds, but will hurt the matrix they are bonded into and cause them to fall out.

Concrete should be treated as if it were stone. Some artists just smooth out the surface of their pieces and then coat them with different finishes to mimic a polished surface. Such finishes are not as durable as a polished surface and need to be maintained over time. They use everything from waxes to epoxy coatings.
