If it's in your budget, replace the carpet with either gray carpet or gray-stained wood. Paint the walls any gray-toned blue or purple, but I would use a light shade that borders on white because it will make the stairway brighter (you can use the same for the ceiling and trim or go with a gray-based white). The light fixture and hardware, including the stair rail, should be silver or pewter colored.

I agree with going with darker wood stair treads or a gray carpet that is in the same tone as the new tiles you are putting in.

I think you should tile that small entry area at foot of steps with same tile you're using in kitchen, and then carpet the steps in a dark grey or grey/black mix. Use brushed nickel door hardware and for lighting, try a small contemporary track light that will highlight a picture on what appears to be a small entry wall. Z Gallerie is a good art source.

Thank you all for your suggestions. The entryway will be tiled the same as greatroom. And all the gold tone hardware will get exchanged out for a silver/nickel tone. I am hoping to remove the handrail for a stainless one in the future.

Paint the risers and stain the steps. Use oil-based paint and nothing less. Sand and prime too before painting.
