I tried this stuff
I bought a small bottle at a wood craft store. I used it in a mortar mix for a stepping stone. The amount of portland and and sand was just a few cups, so the entire mix fit in a mixing bowl. I used several drops and it did a good job coloring the mix. I bet that if you used white portland it would be much better. The cost was 4.99 per bottle. Not too bad.
I will wait till warmer weather to try it on hypertufa.

Mike, I'm waiting on a paste pigment, due to arrive next Monday. I ordered it to use with my metalwork but it also lists ceramic and cement among other things that you can use it on. I've got lots of leaf castings so I'll give it a try on those. I did see some confusing information regarding this paste. The online dealer says you can apply it with your fingers and gives no warnings regarding ventilation. But on Dick Blick's web site it says you have to have good ventilation and to wear gloves, no skin contact. Weird huh?!! Their the only two places I've seen this stuff for sale.
Oh, and it's a topical not integrated into mix. Take a look at both web sites. I'll let you know how it works. Billie

The paste arrived yesterday, I LOVE UPS, only thing is they left someone else's package too! I tried the paste on some leaves last night.
Mike, I only had time to try the paste on two leaves. One was a leaf that I put too much ocher clay and it was a yucko yellow. I've painted several and it took lots of layers to kill the yuckiness. The directions say to let dry for 12 hours and then you can buff if you want. When I opened the can, they reminded me of little shoe polish tins and the paste looks like the waxy shoe polish. Anyway, I used a stiff bristle paint brush to try to get in the veining without using mineral spirits to thin. I've been getting tons of migraines so that was one reason I didn't want to use the mineral spirits. I probably should have put on a layer that was thinned. I did get in most nooks and crannies but there were little spots I didn't get. But coverage was great in just one layer you couldn't see the yucko yellow. The paste color is listed as verdigris but it came out looking a very dark hunter green. When it dried it looked fuzzy to me. I decided to buff it and it gives just enough shine that looks like a natural leaf shine. I can't imagine not buffing because before I buffed the paste came off on your hands???? Now that it's buffed nothing comes off on your hands.
The other leaf that I tried was a straight mortar mix and the leaf was very veiny and bumpy. It was getting late when I did the leaves and I didn't do a good job of getting in the nooks and crannies. BUT I had good coverage with just one layer. This one also has a fuzzy look. I haven't burnished it cause I want a friend to see it.
It's $8 a can and I bought 4 different colors. I like what I've seen so far and can't wait to do more.
I bought this product for my metal work and the piece I tried didn't hold the paste well. I thought I had it clean enough but maybe not. Billie
