Trees winter killed?

This winter I had several young apple trees die down to the bottom of the tree. A couple of them were in the ground two years, while others were just grafted and planted last spring. All of them had decent life and growth last summer, and there was no apparent reason for them to decease. A couple of them have a bud at the very bottom above the graft that is growing out. All of them are on bud 9 roots, were home grafted, planted in similar conditions. Other trees in the same area are doing fine. Perhaps incidentally, some of the rootstocks had a vertical line or two of broken bark. Sort of looks like freeze damage? Perhaps some tunneling creature under the bark? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks, Ted
