How many bathrooms does one need?

My partner & I are considering moving to the USA because of his business. We have been looking on the internet at many many houses for sale. I have noticed a pattern - in the USA it appears that most houses have the same number of bathrooms (which includes a toilet) as bedrooms. Is this a trend? Is this standard? We are after a 4 bedroom house but we don't want 4 full bathrooms. I can understand more than one toilet (yes, we call them toilets here in Australia), but not the same number of full bathrooms as bedrooms.

Hi Laurie,
Basically, there is no thumb rule for allocating the bathroom. It depends upon the need, number of people residing . With a four bedroom house,2 attached bathrooms and one common bathroom will be enough. But,many people prefer attached bathrooms. So there are chances for people fighting for the room with attached bathroom. To simplify the task ,take a note of their day to day activities and decide which one should get attached bathroom. I hope i helped you.
Please feel free to ask any doubt.

I would say for a 'standard' 4 bedroom, 2 level house in the U.S., you would want at least 2 full baths upstairs, a 1/2 bath (powder room just with toilet and sink) in the main floor, and probably another full bath for a finished basement.

But definitely the trend is to have a private bathroom for each bedroom which isn't necessary for everyone.
