Pruning apples should be done when it's dormant. I was told January is best time since it's the coldest time for my area.

In regards what to prune, you should not have much to prune since you bought it last winter. Few that I would prune would be any branches that may cross other branches, and possibly branches that are shooting up which would be in the way of other branches that are growing toward the sides.

Ah. That does indeed help as I do have a branch that is indeed growing straight up.

I shall perhaps see what (if anything) needs doing in January then.

I prune fruit trees professionally and spend 6-7 months doing nothing but every year and have for decades now.
