Squirrels are the most likely culprit, possibly their smaller brethren the chipmunks. Yes, if they have a taste for it, they can strip a tree of green fruit in a day. The problem is, you never know what they're going to go after, they have individual tastes and it also depends on what other food is out there. Last year, it was the "off" year here for black walnuts AND many kinds of oaks that bear in alternate years, and the squirrels really went after my Asian Pears when the fruit was about golf ball sized. I did get some in the end, but they stripped about 2/3rds of it in July, then for whatever reason moved on.

I know what happened to them. The squirrels that ate all mine got hungry again and went over to your place. Lost ALL mine the same way.

Plums are tough to grow up here and after 12 years of trying I finally had a good crop of about 75 or so. Gone. I set out traps and so far 18 critters have taken taken a one-way swim. Hate to do it, but I want my home-grown, hard earned food.

Oh, those #$%@!##!!!!!! squirrels. They ate ALL of my peaches last year. My father-in-law told me a story once about how he waited all night to shoot the squirrel raiding his peach tree. I was horrified. I now understand. If I had a gun.....

Your father in laws attitude is how I am feeling about my deer now. They stripped my poor Apricot apple bare in the last few nights. I strung fishline all over my orchard this morning, we will see how that works.

Get a Kania trap for your squirrels. I was watching the squirrels run away with my peaches and two Kania traps solved my problem. There are some tricks to baiting it for best results but with good baiting it is a very easy trap to use. It is a lethal trap.

I've been having reasonably good luck hanging rotten eggs in mesh bags on the small apple trees. They seem to stay away from them now. I understand why, the smell is pretty bad.

This just happened to me! But my tree was covered with ripe fruit. Under the tree had many fallen smooshed and walked on ones. Every seed, smooshed spot. Gone. Tree was loaded. Every single one is gone! As if they were never there! In between stuff sitting around, cleaned of every plum! It's unnerving!

After reading everyone's comments, squirrels are not my issue. Tree teller then our house. All the hazel nuts were untouched. I took awhile gathering them to. I'm missing thousands of plums. It was covered and a huge tree. And all over the ground.
