More help needed - plant.

I purchased a bunch of lamps at auction (15 for $20.00) most were in one state of disrepair or another but I wanted the glass. Several of the lamps were concoctions of miscellaneous pieces stuck together by a do-it-yourselfer. My garden pagoda was made with the bases from these lamps.

The vase in the picture was glued to another piece and looked really tacky - so I took it apart and put in a wire rack and placed it on a rock in the back yard, planted some small plants and scattered construction sand as a mulch. It has a chip on the lip edge so it canÂt go in "her" house. I think IÂd like to put a water plant in the vase but have no experience with them. Any ideas?

Oh, don't mind the mantis he's been there for ages.
