Apple tree sappling ???

My 8 year old daughter soaked an apple seed in water and it sprouted 1 1/2 years ago. We planted it in a pot with potting soil about a month later. It grew fine and was basically forgotten about on the deck all winter long, and was buried in 4 feet of snow. This spring I was shocked to see it was still alive. We planted it in the ground (with some compost) this spring and it is now almost 7 feet tall. It is growing straight up with no branches.

I was told that I should cut the main stem down to about 4 feet to cause branching.

Before I do anything I just want to make sure that that's what I should do and this is the right time to do it?

Also, I have NEVER added any fertilizer, other then the compost at planting.
