I'm so impressed!

Just 3 or 4 weeks ago I chopped the top of my arboricola schefflera to get it bushier. I stuck the large top in one of my many clear plastic Iced Cap coffee cups which I ask patrons for if they are drinking them at the coffee shop.

I then stuck the whole thing in a large clear plastic bag, hoping to keep it humid. Lo and behold today I took it out of the bag and there are numerous healthy white roots showing through my coffee cup. Yaaaaayyy! I'm SO happy.

My original tree hasn't sprouted any new growth yet, but nothing has died on it either.

If anyone has any clear plastic cups they want to get rid of, send 'em my way. LOL

I don't grow this plant, but am a HUGE fan of those kinds of plastic cups.

I save them from iced coffee or tea in summer time. Sometimes they even have domed lids. I propagate lots of things from cuttings in water in them, from Hoyas to Aralias to Begonias, Aglaonemas, etc.

When the roots get 1" long, I pot it up. Would suggest you do the same (if it's in water). You didn't say if it's in water or mix did you?

Congrats on yr. healthy new roots & keep up the good work!

It's the first time I've tried anything that drastic. That's why I'm so thrilled that it worked for me.

Hey pirate girl, glad I'm not alone in confiscating these awesome drinking cups. When hubby and I are someplace and I see people drinking the iced coffee I practically drool over wanting their cup. I can't wait for them to finish so I can ask for them. I sometimes get strange looks, but they oblige. The lids are awesome for supporting the cuttings in water.

I rooted the schefflera in dirt. Didn't want to take the chance on it all rotting in water.

How about a picture of these cups? I have no idea what you're talking about but it sounds like I need some.

jasdip: Any more, I use perlite for almost all my cuttings, but I still put certain types (including Schefflera, Pothos, Monstera, some others) in water. Replacing the water every day (at least every couple) is about the only thing to prevent rotting that I know of. The big thing is providing oxygen to the roots, which stagnant water lacks so replacing the water helps replenish it.

J_nail, I'm trying to root the top of a yucca that I bought cheap at a yard sale. I've got it in dirt, and the leaves are yellowing somewhat. Do you think this can be put in water??
I really thought just soft cuttings like philos, etc could be rooted in water.

BTW, plastic water bottles cut about 1/3 way down also make real dandy avocado pit starters, and cutting holders!

m_taggart, I get my cups at Tim Horton's (much like your Dunkin Donut chain) for the most part. You know what else works, Dairy Queen sell some kind of Iced Coffee Mocha drink. Those cups are great.
They're all huge, clear plastic with a logo, and they have a plastic dome lid where the straw sits. Iced Cappaccino drinks; much like a milkshake.

Starbucks has them. My SIL buys cups direct from her Starbucks.

You can also get them at restaurant supply stores, they are clean and you don't have to embarass your family by asking strangers for them. :) I only embarass family for cuttings of plants at neighbor's houses. Always be sure to ask for cuttings, it's heartbreaking to see your plants dissapear.
