Issues with using a non-draining container?

Hello, and a special hello to Al who I'm sure will chime in here :P

I know about the theory of soils as outlined in Al's magnificent treatise, and have converted to using his mix. Recently I have been looking into terrariums which lead me to looking at some of the things supplied at etsy.com

Several things I have seen are plants growing in non-draining containers. I have a fair amount of glassware and this is something I've been wanting to do *I have a martini glass I'm just itching to transform into a pot* but I'm not sure about issues with salt buildup, accumulation, or algae growth.

I tried growing a Gynura Aurantica in a rather nice glass container but it always wound up growing algae after a while :(

Any thoughts on the feasibility of using non-draining glass *like the aforementioned martini glass* as a long-term container?
