Replacement for Blackstone

My seed trio consists of award/blackstone/bedazzled. I have a new driveway and need to seed a couple thousand sq feet.

Not worried about the hot sun too much, I have an irrigation system and i do have part shade so I'll be fine with the heat.

Problem is I cannot find any Blackstone seed. I have been told that Excursion and Princeton 105 are good replacements for that type up here in MA.

Can anyone with KBG knowledge weigh in on this?

thanks

This SeedQuest article says Blackstone was by Turf Seed Inc. I followed the link to their site and didn't see it listed under their product line. Maybe they don't make it anymore.

Here is a link that might be useful: Seedquest Article

There was a post not long ago that mentioned Turf-seed was bought out by some other company, but all the folks that worked there are at a different company and selling the same seed.

Try doing a search for Turf-seed on this forum to find that thread, or maybe someone will chime in soon.

I called Turf Seed yesterday, they don't have any either. So I guess I'm looking for a replacement. So far it looks like Princeton 105 performs very well up here, even better than Blackstone, but I called a few places and they are all out. So it looks like I'll get some excusion to get me through until the fall overseeding.

You don't want to Award and and Excursion together. I'm wondering if I suggested the original blend. If so, I expect the Award was the Midnight type I selected for shade tolerance. Do you have shade?

    Mallory,
Most of my lawn gets some shade during the day, not much though. The only area I get a lot of shade is near the street, I have several maples there.

So anyway, what other kind would you reccomend if Excursion is not a good choice?

    Thanks

    Moonlight

    Darn it!
I almost ordered that one, but before I saw your reply from the 24th, I had already ordered Excursion.
Since it is not mixed, I still can leave it out.

However can I ask why excursion is not a good KBG for me to add with award and bedazzled?

    Thanks again.

    You want genetic diversity.

Excursion and Award are both Midnight types.
    Bedazzled is an America type.
Something from the compact type, like Moonlight,
will compliment the other two types.

    Yeah, what Brian said.
A couple years ago, I posted all the KBGs catagorized by types and gave a brief synopsis as well as advice on blend selecting. I never did submit it to the FAQ section, but I'm going to post it again and get it into the FAQs so everyone can see how it works.

Another reason you don't want those two together is your shade area. The Midnight types are especially susceptible to powdery mildew, which is more likely to happen in the shade. Both Award and Moonlight will provide some shade tolerance while Bedazzled will help protect the stand from powdery mildew. Mow slightly higher in shade. If you normally mow at 3 inches, cut the shady areas at 4.
